“The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.” Mark Twain.
The cardinal points of the zodiac include the two solstices and the two equinoxes. As we shift from summer to fall, this is also a shift from Virgo to Libra. The qualities of this shift are unique. The first six signs of the zodiac, or the lower half of what we call a Natural Chart (each sign in its own house, i.e. Aries in the first house and so on around the chart), are all about the development of self, something which could be viewed symbolically as the growth from newborn infant (Aries) to an adult who recognizes that not only are we “two” but the other part of us is Divine and it is our job to nurture that Divine Spark. This is the recognition of Virgo.
And then, we step across the horizon line at the Descendant – opposite the Ascendant – and into the idea of forming a committed partnership with an Other: romantic partner, business partner or the highest partner of all, the Higher Self. From that seventh house on around to the twelfth we become increasingly aware of others in the world, who we are with them, of how we serve and what our higher purpose is. Therefore, when stepping across the horizon line at the Descendant we still have one foot in the half of the chart all about self, about life on Earth and about the dark side of the chart. The other foot has stepped into the light, the upper half of the chart and now we see clearly, heaven above and earth below. This is the balance of Libra which we all ultimately seek: “Not to live in this world less, but in both worlds more.” Madame Helena Blavatsky
